David Isaacs

The eldest of sixteen children, David Isaacs was born in Denham Town and began his career in the music industry as a record salesman in the mid-sixties, making the transition to recording artiste in 1966 with the best-selling ‘I’d Rather Be Lonely’, produced by Byron Lee’s business partner, Ronnie Nasralla.

Around this time he also became a regular vocalist with Lyn Taitt & the Comets, one of the most popular bands on Jamaica’s hotel and club circuit and it was while with the group that he first began performing the Stevie Wonder hit ‘A Place In The Sun’, which promptly proved a favourite among the group’s audiences. Its popularity led to Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry recording the singer’s version at Clement ‘Coxson’ Dodd’s Studio One facility in August 1968, with the disc subsequently becoming a sizable seller, particularly in the UK, where it saw issue on the recently launched Trojan label.

Isaacs and Perry continued to work together over the next few years, but in the mid-seventies their relationship finally came to an end. Isaacs finally returned to the spotlight once more towards the close of the decade with works for Bunny Lee and Blackbeard, although it was the Lover’s Rock hit, ‘Just Like The Sea’ for Witty Reid in 1979 that provided him with his first major hit for over a decade.

Over the years that immediately followed he cut a number of singles and solo albums before joining the Itals in 1987, recording and touring intermittently with the group up until his sudden and unexpected death on December 21st 2009.
